Regulators P5

Regulators
Into
Ofcom is a TV regulator established in the UK.It's their job is to regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate meaning their job is a really wide range.

Their key role is to stop UK viewer from being scammed or being taking advantages off by television  companies in the UK.While regulating code of conduct for the communications services  to follow.Their roles are to keep UK audiences safe and protected from offensive material, radio services are also regulated by them.

The creation of Ofcom was announced in the Queen's Speech to the UK parliament in June 2001. However, the company was finally founded on December 29th, 2003 making them a unique and new organisation that gives the audiences powers to control, what media content is approvable.

Ofcom 10 code of conduct
  • Practice to follow 8.12 Telephone calls It is acceptable to record telephone calls for note taking purposes.
  • Practice to follow 8.1 An infringement of privacy in connection with obtaining material Ofcom may only consider an infringement of privacy in the making of a programme if the programme is broadcast.
  • Complaints in this area may arise through a lack of understanding of what was actually agreed in the first instance.
  • In these circumstances, “contribute” can include an interview, live or recorded, or a report of a written or oral statement or comments.
  • Broadcasters should take care to report surveys and statistics in context.
  • Broadcasters should be aware that there are areas of offensive language and material which are particularly sensitive.
  • An image (however brief) that can be seen by viewers is not subliminal.
  • This rule does not apply to the founders of recognised religions and/or belief systems (for example Jesus Christ and Buddha).
  • The meaning given in this section does not include comedies, drama or general entertainment programmes demonstrably of a non-religious nature.
  • Every complaint or case will be dealt with on a case by case basis according to the individual facts of the case.

Ofcom are relevant to my show Being human since it's a very controversial TV show with explicit scenes and images like: sex, language, violence and more.Additionally to that the TV show is also owned by the BBC primarily BBC3, making most of their content aimed at younger audiences, which makes it more important that the TV programme shown, are regulated by ofcom . Unfortunately  after doing my research on being human, there was no evidence found that supports being as cussed any a  serious offence due to its explicit scene. However there was no compliant for the TV show being human and if they was it was not covered by ofcom;nevertheless if a viewer does get affected or offended by the content in the BBC 3 TV show Being human they have to go the ofcom’s official website to file in there compliances.

Copyright
Copyright is an illegal way of stopping anyone from using or copying your work while stopping others from copying or taking your work as their own. Copyright links to a lot of media content like films, music ,books , art and more. By using the copy you can stop an outsider from displaying your work as their own;you even have the power to take it further by suing anyone who tries to use it as their own.Youtube is a great example for this since they fight  plagiarism every day.Videos are uploaded on YouTube and most of them are infringement. This links to the tv show being human because they also have a copyright infringement on their media products which gives them the right to take down their content that’s being by unknown users.  Another example of this seen on my YouTube channel where I used BBC copyrighted content in my educational video analysis for media but  it was later taken down by YouTube since it had copyright content in it; meaning if you don’t have the right to use their produces you can’t using it at all even if it for educational reasons. After your video is flag it's then taking down and blocked so nobody  can watch it.

Royalties

The music industry depends on royalties generated by the licensing of copyrighted songs as a primary source of payment for musicians. These  are two types of Royalties copyrights:performing artists hold the rights to a particular recording of a song, songwriters hold the rights to the lyrics and melody for  music this is called master recording. Songwriters can only seek copyright for a full song only ,however, they cannot divide lyrics and melody into separate rights. An example of this can be seen in the tv show being human there their soundtrack is made by artist like “The Prodigy” which BBC used for the tv show being human. They got hold of this artist soundtrack by buying it online .

Legal and ethical
  • Our company will do all it can to make sure that controversial subjects are handled with care and diligence before used in our film.
  • 4.2.2 News in whatever form must be treated with due impartiality, giving due weight to events, opinion and main strands of argument.

Representation

Humans representation for Gender is perhaps the basic category we use for sorting human beings; which is an essential key to our own identities.
But how does the media represent both males and females.
The Media portray Male characters a bit like a lone wolf who does not depend on others to advertise their obligations.
The most unrealistic part of a male presentation is Physique ; the way this is showed in the media makes it hard for normal males to meet the physical attributes displayed on the television screen as well as social media e.g. : Instagram, Facebook ,Tumblr and more. Nervelessly the media shows viewers a distorted representation of what masculinity is, which could connote to them as the norm.

Tough
Don’t get too emotional
Hard
Can carry themselves
Sweaty
smalls and works hard
Dominate
Have social influence on others
Simple minded
Gose with the flow “chilled out ”

This is how a Young male perception of masculinity was distorted. To them, the denotation of being a man or manning up is very ignorant but that's because they don’t know any better . To them masculinity means not showing your negative emotion around other males ; as well as only have the physical attraction to female  ; which means if you don’t fit into the social norm; they would then be cast aside making them an outcast in there on society as well as themselves.Segregation and classification are the two main keys that the media used to represent male by the media.

  • Beauty (within narrow conventions)
  • size/physique (again, within narrow conventions)
  • sexuality (as expressed by the above)
  • emotional (as opposed to intellectual)DEALINGS
  • relationships (as opposed to independence/freedom)

My example of this can be Singers,Actress as well as models. The all have something in common which is the “Media” ; the media has so much control over female representation it's almost depressing. The media as the power to influence younger female audiences. Making some of them believe what they are saying or reading can be achieved. However, it’s all just an illusion created to show false representation of females by the mass media
Kind
Show positive emotions to others
Beautiful
physically attractive to others
Weak
Independent on the opposite sex
Soft
Smooth and comfortable
Fragile
Delicate and glial
Good Representation of Women can be everywhere but it not show or forced on by the media. The way women are now and how they were a few centuries ago is way different; thanks to amazing women who fight  for their right as woman  .
Yet all this is forgotten and suppressed by the media. Woman are now surpassed males in education but unfortunately they are still paid less that males.  However women are rising up to the matter and fight again for equality. This relates to Being Human since the show represents the characters as normal humans with unusual everyday problem. Yet the show manages to show positive and negative representation for all three characters; an example of this is George, his character as plan and mediocre in the show his just show as an average British man, who likes to complain a lot, he’s shown as a very emotional character, making look weak in the eyes of viewers, he worries too much making him look soft and delicate. Overall George is understandable with good ethics in life making him really relatable. However the show labelled him as the sentimental one in the group, this could be seen as a weakness in the males viewers eyes but seen as strength in the female viewers eyes.

Despite that Annie the ghost is represented as a unstable character in the show, meaning she's also emotional, most times her emotions are so unstable that she's depressed half of the time, which could link to her being a ghost, but this can impact audience's emotion if they have also had similar negative emotions affecting their lives. However she's seen as kind, sort, beautiful with a positive energy, this can then suddenly change in intents to negative as if she has bipolar, so you never know what to expect when Annie is in the scene. Making a non-human characters experience human problems and  dealing with it in there own ways, relate to the audience's sinces they also have their own issues that they have to overcome them or with other going through the same issues. This is the impact the show gives to it viewers. Belonging.

Being Human P2

Being Human

The purpose of the TV program being human is to provide escapism as well as entertainment for its viewers ; I came to this conclusion  after analyzing the type of world our three main characters live in.  Using mythical monsters such as  werewolves, ghost and vampires shows the audience that the show is based on fan-fictions, fused with a hint of horror and comedy to balance it with the real world. By providing the viewers with mixed genres, encourages the TV show to have various ways to improve or even adapt to its targeted audience. Tully another werewolf befriends George and  takes him under his wing;to show him how to control as well as deal with his powers, this was shown in season one, episode number one and  aired On February 1, 2009. What I discovered while watching this TV show is how it displays drama with a realistic approach by giving the characters a dilemma to overcome in every  single episode; this can relate to the viewers since they have to face that fact that life will challenge them in many ways from Relationships, work , friends, family as well as society. Gradually the viewers can correlate similarities between the 3 main characters , whose purposes are to involve the audiences while relating to them;an example of this can be seen in
Season number: 1
Episode number: 2
Air date: February 1, 2009 ;  Another werewolf befriends George and takes him under his wing. This episode's purpose was to display loneliness and isolation as well as segregation. By playing on George's  emotion to come to terms with his inner-beast since he's unable to control his transformation; because of this, he could not fully relate to the other main characters, who are also suffered from the same dilemma as him but with different ways of coping with it . In response to his problem he decided to trust the other werewolf, who was also suffering the same problems, “being different” and not “Being Human”  but mainly being lonely. Not soon after Tully the other werewolf finally befriends George, while influencing his personality, style, and friendship, Causing him to fall out with his real friends in the process. To me, the purpose of this episode was to show the relationships between friends  as well as ways they can be influenced while affect your life in the process, which was the purpose of this episode.Overall this TV show was purely made to create a world similar to ours but with supernatural twists intertwined  into it, to entertain the audiences as well as creating escapism for them, away from their world ; at the same time different problems are adding to create a new dilemma, which they all have to overcome at the end of the episode . An example of this can be seen in episode 2 where George tries to get rid  Annie the ghost because she's too unstable, meaning she can’t control her ghost powers , such as moving objects with her mind  and more. This made George sceptical about having Annie around since she could blow their cover, if she lost control which can happen whenever her negative emotions are triggered , like anger and sadness . This is where they have to overcome their differences, and learn to live with another. This can relate to viewers watching this because they may have had a friend or family that they can’t handle or deal with ; which is this episodes unique selling point ,telling the viewers you can always find way to connect with each other despite your differences .

Meaning
Audio Codes (Sound)

The sound used in the TV show being human is overly chill yet spooky; which goes with the story's narrative. Depending on the characters' emotions and conditions the soundtrack would change dramatically increased while synchronizing with the character action and state of mind. The sounds used in Being Human are often diegetic but that's solely based on the characters communicating using diegetic sounds or doing everyday activities like washing  up,walking ,talking and more. Additionally, diegetic sounds can be heard by both characters inside the scenes as well as audiences watch the scene on their screen, making it diegetic sounds. Moreover, non-diegetic sounds is also a primal factor used in this show;after all this TV program is focused on supernatural, comedy and horror  making non-diegetic sounds more relevant as well as compose.

Visual Codes
Visually the show is well informed using low key lighting, this lighting displays the show's theme which is Supernatural and Horror fiction. By using low key lighting it denotes to the viewers that the show is in the horror or even supernatural genre; such as the scene that displayed a bright moon, surrounded with a low key forest scenery. The purposes of this was to show the audiences that moonlight turns one of the main characters,George into a werewolf. However the audiences denotation for the moon is horror and transformation or even a bad omen in the show, which was repeated throughout the whole season;given it a symbolic meaning, every time the audiences see a moonlight scenes, this connotes to them, that George the werewolf is about to transform since the moonlight is out, which creates panic to both the  viewers as well as the characters in the TV show . Visually the show maintains its color tone using low key lighting consistently in throughout the show.

The main setting for the TV show  Being Human is set in 2 main locations  Bristol General Hospital,UK and the home the 3 chapters live in;other times the location can change depending on the characters circumstances and situation;an example of this can be seen in episode 1,2 and 3 where George the werewolf ran into the forest to get away from civilization,so he couldn’t cause harm to any other humans.

Makeup was used very well an example of this can be shown where George was transformed into a werewolf; fake hair was attached to a leather wolf suit, additionally a bit of the transformation was also animated giving it more reason more realism.

Air date: 25 January 2009 where Mitchell struggles with his growing lust for blood when he's asked out on a date while Annie has a harder time dealing with her emotions then she came  face to face with someone from her past. George has nowhere to transform.
The equilibrium starts off with both George, Mitchell  moving into their rented apartment, where one of the other characters called Annie, who's a ghost reside; this is where everything was balanced and normal even though our characters weren’t. Everyone was happy and at peace with the world even though they were focused to live as humans, they also had to adapt to their  situation;Despite their situation, this is the equilibrium, our characters actually wanted for them as well as  others like them, to live amongst human in peace.

However all this was disrupted; when George accidentally discovered one of Mitchell's ex after she attending to feed on him. This came to a shock to both the viewers as well as George since she was presumed dead ,as well as announced Dead by the police. After George discovered that, she's not only alive but was also transformed into a Vampire by his best friend Mitchell .
